What Is AI-Enhanced LiDAR? How KIRI Engine Improves iPhone Scene Scans

Learn what AI-Enhanced LiDAR is, how KIRI Engine improves iPhone Scene Scan output, and when to use it for cleaner surfaces, edges, and geometry.

AI-Enhanced LiDAR is KIRI Engine's Pro-level LiDAR enhancement technology for Scene Scan. It uses cloud-based AI processing to refine raw iPhone LiDAR depth data, reducing surface noise, sharpening structural edges, and improving consistency across low-texture areas. It is available for Scene Scan on KIRI Engine Pro plans.

AI-Enhanced LiDAR for KIRI Engine Scene Scan

The LiDAR sensor in iPhone Pro models captures depth data fast. But raw LiDAR output has a quality ceiling: surfaces come out noisy, edges blur at boundaries, and low-texture areas produce inconsistent geometry. For quick spatial reference this is often fine. For 3D modeling, measurement, or environment reconstruction, it usually isn't.

KIRI Engine v3.14 introduced AI-Enhanced LiDAR to address this: a Pro-level option for Scene Scan that applies cloud-based AI processing after capture, producing cleaner geometry without changing how the scan is taken.

AI-Enhanced LiDAR refines raw Scene Scan depth data to produce cleaner surfaces, clearer boundaries, and more consistent indoor geometry.

Why Raw LiDAR Data Has a Quality Ceiling

iPhone LiDAR is fast and doesn't require controlled lighting, but raw depth data from a consumer sensor has consistent limitations: flat surfaces come back noisy, edges blur where two surfaces meet, and low-texture areas like painted walls tend to drift. For a quick spatial reference these artifacts are minor. For anything you'll edit, measure from, or render, they become real problems.

For a full technical explanation of how these limitations work and the AI models KIRI uses to address them, see the v3.14 release notes.

How AI-Enhanced LiDAR Works in KIRI Engine

AI-Enhanced LiDAR is a Pro enhancement option for Scene Scan. It is not a separate scan mode. It is an optional processing upgrade that Pro users can enable when capturing a scene. Room Scan and Object Capture use standard local processing and are not affected by this option.

KIRI Engine AI-Enhanced LiDAR cloud processing option for Scene ScanAI-Enhanced LiDAR is selected after Scene Scan capture as a Pro cloud processing option, while the capture process stays the same as standard Scene Scan.

The capture process is identical to standard Scene Scan. Move the phone slowly through the environment, let the sensor build a depth map. The difference is what happens after capture.

With standard processing, the raw depth data is handled on-device and the result is exported as-is. With AI-Enhanced LiDAR enabled, the captured depth data is uploaded to KIRI Engine's cloud processing pipeline, where an AI model refines the raw signal before the final output is returned.

The AI processing step targets three specific issues:

  • Noise reduction: point scatter on flat surfaces is smoothed without eliminating real geometric variation

  • Edge sharpening: surface boundaries are reconstructed with higher precision, recovering definition at corners and transitions

  • Structural consistency: depth values across low-texture surfaces are regularized to reduce drift artifacts

This is not a simple smoothing filter. Instead of processing the entire scan uniformly, the AI processing is designed to reduce unwanted surface noise while preserving structural boundaries such as corners, wall edges, and object silhouettes.

What the Output Difference Looks Like

The improvement is usually most visible in scene areas where raw LiDAR data struggles: flat surfaces, structural edges, and low-texture spaces.

Walls, floors, and other flat surfaces: Raw LiDAR can introduce small surface noise on areas that should be flat, especially when scanning from a distance or across a larger room. AI-Enhanced LiDAR helps produce a cleaner and more consistent surface representation.

Corners and structural boundaries: Edges where walls, floors, ceilings, or large objects meet can look soft or uneven in raw LiDAR output. AI enhancement helps preserve clearer boundaries and more defined scene structure.

Low-texture indoor areas: Painted walls, plain floors, and other low-detail surfaces can produce inconsistent depth data. AI-Enhanced LiDAR is designed to reduce these artifacts and make the overall Scene Scan output easier to use for modeling, documentation, or visual reference.

When to Use AI-Enhanced LiDAR vs Other LiDAR Modes

Goal

Recommended option

Free or Pro

Generate a 2D floor plan with measurements

Room Scan

Free

Quick scene capture, no quality requirement

Scene Scan (standard)

Free

Detailed 3D model of a single object

Object Capture

Free

Offline use, no internet connection

Any standard mode

Free

Cleaner Scene Scan output for modeling or documentation

Pro

AI-Enhanced LiDAR is the right choice when surface quality matters: a Blender scene, a Unity or Unreal environment, a point cloud used for documentation, or a 3D scene that will be inspected closely. For floor plans and quick reference scans, Room Scan and standard Scene Scan are faster and don't require a cloud round-trip.

Device and Processing Requirements

Supported devices: iPhone 12 Pro / Pro Max and all later Pro and Pro Max models, iPad Pro (2020, 11-inch and 12.9-inch) and later. The LiDAR sensor is required. Standard iPhone models are not supported.

Internet connection: Required for the AI processing step. The capture itself happens locally on-device at full speed. The AI refinement runs in the cloud after the scan is complete.

Subscription: AI-Enhanced LiDAR requires a KIRI Engine Pro plan. Room Scan, Scene Scan, and Object Capture are available on the free plan. A free account is required to use the app.

Export formats: OBJ and USDZ. Full details on the export formats page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What version of KIRI Engine introduced AI-Enhanced LiDAR? AI-Enhanced LiDAR was introduced in KIRI Engine v3.14. The full release details are in the v3.14 announcement.

Is AI-Enhanced LiDAR free? No. AI-Enhanced LiDAR requires a KIRI Engine Pro subscription. It is only available for Scene Scan. Room Scan, Scene Scan (standard), and Object Capture are available on the free plan.

How is AI-Enhanced LiDAR different from standard Scene Scan? Both modes use the iPhone LiDAR sensor for capture. The difference is post-processing: standard Scene Scan processes depth data on-device and exports it as-is. AI-Enhanced LiDAR sends the captured depth data to a cloud AI pipeline that reduces noise, sharpens edges, and improves structural consistency before returning the final output.

Does AI-Enhanced LiDAR work with Room Scan or Object Capture? No. AI-Enhanced LiDAR applies to Scene Scan only. Room Scan and Object Capture use standard local on-device processing and do not have an AI-Enhanced option. Room Scan is optimized for generating 2D floor plans; Object Capture is optimized for single-object 3D models. Both produce reliable results with standard processing for their intended use cases.

Does any other LiDAR app have this feature? Among the major iPhone LiDAR apps reviewed in our comparison, KIRI Engine is the only one we found that presents a dedicated AI refinement step for Scene Scan depth data as a product feature. Other major LiDAR apps we reviewed do not present a comparable dedicated AI enhancement step for Scene Scan depth data as a product feature.

What are the main use cases for AI-Enhanced LiDAR? Environment scanning for 3D modeling software (Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity), point cloud generation for measurement and documentation, and scene reconstruction where surface quality affects the final result. For a broader look at where LiDAR fits among scanning methods, see Best LiDAR 3D Scanner Apps for iPhone (2026).
